Gender bending is sometimes a form of social activism undertaken to destroy rigid gender roles.

Hey dude, pass the ball!

Are you a girl or a boy?

Oh, I thought you were a boy.

Do you know that you are in a women’s bathroom?

Such sentences I get to hear every now and then.

Society, including myself, often, for their own comfort, is choosing to put people they see in categories - this is a man, this is a woman.

At the moment when it is hard to categorise someone, confusion and sometimes fear appears because of the unknown.

This fear can give way to several reactions, for example, ignorance, denial and even aggression.

With this performance I am showing that one person can choose to look like a boy, like a girl or someone in between - who they truly are.

Gendebender is a 40 minutes long performance prepared for and performed in the performance festival Starptelpa in Riga, Latvia, H2O quarter on the 15th of June, 2019.
